This is a really interesting guitar amp. There’s a bit of a trend at the moment towards smaller, low wattage amps that aren’t just restricted to use in the bedroom.

This Marshall Lunchbox amp is capable of delivering some great tones to suit many styles of playing.

Have a look at this video demo of the amp. The guy in this demo gigs with the Lunchbox into an external speaker cabinet.

Marshall Guitar Amp

Since hitting the streets in February 2009, the ultra-compact ZT Lunchbox amplifier has changed the way many players think about amps. The Lunchbox has proven that an amp does not need to be big to be loud, or expensive to sound great. That you can actually gig with an amp that weighs less than 10 pounds. Doubters have become believers – The Lunchbox really delivers.

Packing 200 watts of power, the Lunchbox has enough output for a jam or live gig, and world-class tone that has pros using it in the studio as well as onstage. Unlike any other amp close to its size, it has the muscle to handle any effects you throw in front of it, and the warmth and depth to sound great with single-coil pickups as well as humbuckers.

Go ahead, plug in and see for yourself. Then, lift your jaw up off the floor, toss your Lunchbox in a backpack with some cords and pedals, and get out there and play!

steve lukather transition

Steve Lukather’s new album Transition on Mascot Records strikes a perfect balance of style, power and imagination as he takes risks and challenges himself in ways most other players can’t even approach.

That’s been standard operating procedure for this high-wire artist of the six-string for nearly four decades, as his career has gone from the studios of Los Angeles to the world’s biggest concert halls to the helm of the multi-platinum selling group Toto and, recently, to ground-breaking tours with Ringo Starr, guitar geniuses Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, and the reunited Toto, who have scheduled a follow-up 35th anniversary tour for 2013.

“I’ve got a lot to be thankful for, and now is a perfect time for me to take stock of that, which is part of what Transition is about”, Lukather says.

When I told my parents I wanted to get an electric guitar, they asked John to help find one for me. My dad was a piano player and John was his musical nephew – a guitar player. John is 26 years older than me – he’s at one end of our ‘cousin’ generation and I’m the youngest at the other end.

Of course, when you have an electric guitar, you also need an amp. I didn’t have one and there was no way my parents could afford to buy me one. So John lent me one of his. It was a home-made valve amp with a 12″ speaker box. Nothing great, but it was an amp.

So all through high school, I played through that amp. At some stage I bought a distortion pedal (for $20!), but that amp stayed with me for around six years. I had a friend buy a Marshall (he worked part-time for over a year to afford it), and whilst I was jealous, it taught me something very important – having good gear is nowhere near as important as being able to play well.

And whilst I didn’t see a lot of John, he was very influential. When Australian band Cold Chisel announced they were breaking up in 1983, John and his wife Sue took me to their final Adelaide concert. October 23, 1983 at the Apollo Stadium. I still have the t-shirt. It was the first ‘proper’ concert I’d been to and, at 14 years of age it made a huge impression on me.

When Eric Clapton came to town in the early 90′s, we went to the concert together. I saw him in the audience at an Eric Johnson concert and a Robben Ford concert in Adelaide.

John celebrated his 70th birthday on the weekend and decided he wanted to play guitar for the night (great idea!!). So he got a bunch of mates from previous bands and performed music from the different eras that he’d been part of. And he asked me to play with him. We’d played together at my 40th and had a great time so he wanted to do it again. He’d heard me play on a You Tube video for a Robben Ford Competition that Truefire had put on, so we used that track to jam together.

This is totally unrehearsed, and a lot of fun. So much fun that when we finished, John said “that was too short, let’s do it again” so we did! This is the first version (we were just warming up!).

Hope you enjoy the video – we had a lot of fun making it!

Finally, can I encourage you all to be a ‘John’ to someone in your life. Find a friend or relative who’s interested in playing guitar and help them. I had a few people I looked up to when I first started, and without their encouragement, I doubt I would have continued. I’m so glad I did, because playing guitar has given me many years of joy.

Did you enjoy the video? Leave a comment below and let me know what you think.

Guitars

Guitar is 38 inches in length and come with Steel Strings. The guitar has Linden Binding and wood construction with geared tuning. Each guitar comes with an extra set of steel strings, pick, tuner, gig bag and strap. The Steel String Acoustic Guitar is perhaps the most versatile and common guitar type. The Steel String Acoustic Guitar has a loud, bright ringing tone that clearly projects to the listener. This type of guitar is the backbone of most country and bluegrass bands. It’s perfect for backing a singer and its stylistic palette encompasses everything from New Age and Country Blues, to hot Bluegrass flatpicking, jazz fusion and “unplugged” rock. Tuning Pegs are made of Brass and Steel for easy tuning and to keep the tuned string held in position.

There’s still a lot of guitar in modern pop music, despite the use of sequencers and programming. The folks over at TrueFire have just released a new guitar course called Pop Survival Guide featuring the talents of Massimo Varini.

It looks like a great course looking at strumming patterns, chord shapes, electric guitar etc. It’s not for beginner guitarists but would suit someone who has been playing for a while and knows the basics.

There’s some ideas in this course that I already use, but looking at these sample videos I still learnt a couple of new ideas.

In this first video, Massimo shows you some different strumming patterns over a 12/8 time signature. I especially like the way he strums harder on some of the strings to make them louder.

This next video shows some strumming and arpeggio ideas that are useful when the guitar is backing the vocals and there’s not much else in the mix. The added 9th on the Em chord is very nice – listen to how he holds it through other chords.

In the next video, Massimo uses a capo and talks about the CAGED system. I love using a capo, particularly when recording acoustic guitar.

In this video Massimo cover what he calls ‘safe’ chord extensions. There are some great ideas here.

In this last video he talks about finding the right notes to build up a good pop guitar solo.

I love the ideas he plays in this last video and I’ve been working on them tonight before I wrote this post.

This seems like a good series of lessons. What I’ve shown here is only the tip of the iceberg! The course has 72 videos and 242 minutes of teaching! That’s a lot of content that can help you improve as a player.
